RYA Competent Crew Course – Practical

The RYA Competent Crew course is designed for the newcomer to sailing and we deliver the fundamental skills and knowledge of personal safety, seamanship and helmsmanship in a fun filled environment.

Our ratio of 1 instructor to 4 students ensures plenty of attention to the development of individual students. This practical course is spent on board one of our modern yachts where you will not only complete the RYA Competent Crew course but also experience the joys of life on the water. By the end of the course, you will be a confident and capable crew member.

Our RYA Competent Crew courses can be run in conjunction with our Day Skipper course which benefits the students with shared knowledge and experiences. The Competent Crew students can gain a view on the skills required for the next level, whilst the Day Skipper candidates develop their newfound skippering skills.

RYA Competent Crew Course – First Evening

Meet your Instructor and fellow crew members at Neyland Marina. Over the crews first supper together your instructor will explain the weather forecast and tidal conditions for the days ahead and discuss the course itinerary. Before jumping into sleeping bags for a good night’s rest, you may wish to explore the marina facilities and pop into one of the local hostelries.

RYA Competent Crew Course – First Day

The boat orientation allows you to familiarise yourself with all with the working parts of a sailing vessel from stem to stern. Your instructor will take you through the aspects of sea safety and safety equipment. Each crew member will be carefully considered and fitted with all required safety gear. Now the sailing begins. Day one is spent in the estuary, which offers a huge expanse of relatively sheltered water. This is the ideal environment for you to familiarise yourself with how to work the boat, putting sails up and down, reefing or reducing sail and of course steering the vessel. As the first day draws to a close, we will navigate to a picturesque anchorage or mooring. Over a freshly prepared evening meal your skipper will review the achievements of the day. Evening course work for students may include the washing up and inflating the dinghy for a shore-based refreshment.

RYA Competent Crew Course – The Rest

Exact itineraries are difficult to forecast due to varying weather and tidal conditions, however the full RYA Competent Crew course will be delivered in this unique coastal location. Pembrokeshire’s sailing area combines commercial shipping in large, sheltered estuary with a spectacular coastline, marine nature reserve Islands, picturesque harbours and anchorages all set within the UK’s only Coastal National Park. Many of our students observe and photograph some of the famous wildlife found around our shores including Dolphin, Seals, Puffins and other rare seabirds. Check out our gallery board for some of our student experiences.
