The RYA Day Skipper Practical course is designed to progress students to confidently and safely skipper a yacht, taking full responsibility for the crew and vessel.
The syllabus covers preparation for sea, deck work, navigation, pilotage, meteorology, rules of the road, maintenance and repair work, engines, victualling, emergency situations, yacht handling under sail and power, passage making and night cruising. Many of our students consider this a sufficient level of ability to purchase their own yacht. RYA Day Skipper Practical – First Evening
Meet your Instructor and fellow crew members at Neyland Marina. Over the crews first supper together your instructor will explain the weather forecast and tidal conditions for the days ahead and discuss the course itinerary. Before jumping into sleeping bags for a good night’s rest, you may wish to explore the marina facilities and pop into one of the local hostelries.
RYA Day Skipper Practical – First Day
The boat orientation allows you to familiarise yourself with all the working parts of a sailing vessel from stem to stern. Your instructor will take you through the aspects of sea safety and safety equipment. Each crew member will be carefully considered and fitted with all required safety gear. Now the sailing begins. Day one is spent in the estuary tacking, gybing, reefing and sail trimming. As the first day draws to a close, we will navigate to a picturesque anchorage or mooring. Over a freshly prepared evening meal your skipper will review the achievements of the day. Evening course work for students may include the washing up and inflating the dinghy for a shore-based refreshment.
RYA Day Skipper Practical – The Rest
Exact itineraries are difficult to forecast due to varying weather and tidal conditions, however the full RYA Day Skipper Practical syllabus will be delivered in this unique coastal location. Our ratio of 1 instructor to 4 students ensures plenty of attention to the development of individual students and rest assured you will get plenty of pilotage and close quarter boat handling practice. We encourage our students to take their turn in skippering the yacht for a typical day sail passage, with our instructors on hand to guide and build confidence. Pembrokeshire’s sailing area combines commercial shipping in a large, sheltered estuary with a spectacular coastline, marine nature reserve Islands, picturesque harbours and anchorages all set within the UK’s only Coastal National Park.
